The Melodic Song of the Lazuli Bunting [Passerina amoena]

Males of the Lazuli Bunting species are easily identifiable due to their bright cerulean color on top, with prominent white wingbars, a white belly, and an orange breast. Females, on the other hand, are plain buffy brown with less distinct wingbars and a slightly brighter orange breast. They can be found in semi-open habitats such as shrubby hillsides in western North America. Males often sing from high exposed perches. They typically winter in Mexico, where they congregate in flocks in weedy fields. Identifying female Lazuli Buntings can be difficult as they resemble Indigo Buntings, although their range does not overlap much. One key difference is that female Lazuli Buntings do not have streaks on their underbelly like female Indigo Buntings do, and they also have bolder wingbars, brighter breast, and less contrasting pale throats.
