A ONE-MAN ARMY (Psalms 137: 1-5)
My heart often pulsates with optimism that one day the sense of what I behold and dearly believe in shall be laid in broad daylight. In a land draped in mystery and foreign allure, I ventured into this enigmatic realm where traditions and customs dance like shadows in the moonlight. The atmosphere therein was thick with the scent of unfamiliar tunes. Armed with ambitions of transformation and a spirit of valiance, I endeavored not only to impress the denizens of this exotic realm but also to lead them to my convictions, which I still hold- were true.
Dear friends, in the midst of winter, I found within me, an invincible summer. Having been schooled through the harshest streams of experiences, I have always dared to stand alone and to stand tall. However, sometimes the tides become stronger than our efforts to diffuse our attitude. "How do we sing the songs of Zion in a strange land?" This was the rhetoric tone of Joseph Adams Nehondo, my everlasting friend, who inspired me to hold fast to the faith that was once entrusted unto the saints (Jude 1: 3). Please walk with me into this adventure as I pay tribute to a figure in my life, whose moral compass became a lodestar and a binding foundation of this gospel ministry.
While others navigate through the gates of compromise and the courts of convenience, this man stood resolute on the cliffs of virtue, especially in matters pertaining to God's service. After all, it would be a waste of time and effort to labor this much, all in vain. A man's greatness lies in the consciousness of an honest purpose in life. In our course, we have no choice but to focus on our foundational principles and the needs of our existence. This fact, he rooted deep inside me. Dear gospel ministers, we are admonished to seek indifference in this rendition. We are captives in a foreign land where the intricate dances and drums of the locals often overshadow our resilience. When others falter and sway, holding fast to the golden threads of our principles will help us sing the songs of Zion in the loudest voices possible.
As we sit by these rivers, with murky waters of extreme indulgence, I beseech us to outdo every uncouth societal expectation and fulfill the obligations of our Heavenly Master. By this, we shall shout aloud the songs of Zion and draw men to Jesus. To thine own self, be true- he always reiterated. Indeed, unwavering principles make men appear strong in the face of adversity.
