My car has four ignition coils, one failed and has to be replaced as it wiggles.
Some signs that your ignition coil may be faulty:
Check engine light:
The first sign of a faulty ignition coil is usually the check engine light coming on. This is because the ECU sends out error codes when the ignition coils aren't working properly.
Decreased fuel efficiency:
As the ignition coil breaks down, it becomes less efficient at creating the spark that ignites the engine. This causes the system to inject more fuel to compensate, which results in poor fuel economy.
Misfiring engine:
A faulty ignition coil can cause the engine to misfire, which can be detected by coughing or sputtering sounds when starting the vehicle. While driving, you may feel a jerking or spitting sensation.
Rough idling:
When an ignition coil starts to fail, the engine may run more roughly, causing it to vibrate and generate more noise.
Backfiring:
A faulty ignition coil can cause misfiring, which can lead to a buildup of unburned fuel in the cylinder. This excess fuel can ignite all at once, creating a loud bang known as backfiring
Difficulty starting the engine:
A defective ignition coil can prevent the engine from starting or cause it to start and immediately stall
