@ShellyManne1

I taught myself musical theory as a high school age teenager from reading The Guitar Handbook (circa 87’ edition) over and over and over. There was an aha moment where it all clicked together. Music theory is like math and it is all relative. One analogy to math is understanding that the distance between 2 and 9 is 7. So is the distance between 4 and 11. In the same way, the relationship (distance) between a D note and an A note is a 5th (7 half steps) and so is the relationship (distance) between an E note and B note a 5th (7 half steps).

It’s great how much information is around these days to help understand but I’m not sure a “short cut” exist to learning. The fact that I stared at my guitar book images and simultaneously my guitar (as well as playing) for endless hours, helped me have a blueprint in my minds eye of the entire fretboard by the time the theory was deeply understood. That combination makes me able to move around the fret board effortlessly. It’s information I will never forget. It takes hours and hours and hours of obsessing over. That can’t be taught.

Having said all that, this guy does a great job in explaining the information. It also helps to have a mentor that you can ask questions when you have unanswered questions in your mind.

@agent_mc

The major scale (WWHWWWH) is the ionian scale, right?

@mickvictor

Uh......duh........what'd he say? This is why I stopped trying years ago to understand theory. I'm just too stupid!😂

He needs to wear a long sleeve shirt. Those tattoos are just too offensive and nasty to look at.

@tifanijones2158

That’s a lot of explaining without showing it All. I am a monkey see monkey do. The talking without showing does me no good. Even if at the end you “put it together” you said a lot more in the beginning that I now have to figure out where it apply. Jmho
